The Story of Maggie Polpin Is An All Time Favorite

Big Maggie is written by playwright John B. Keane, which was first performed in 1968. You can find this title along with many others on Mediahitt. This play is studied at Leaving Cert as a beginner level English course in Ireland.

The story tells us of Maggie Polpin who after losing her husband to death, is widowed with the responsibility of raising up her four children. She now is the sole owner of the shop and farm that her dead husband left behind. Maggie is depicted in the play as a complex figure who is far from the cliche that precede her portraying her as a dutiful Irish housewife.

Maggie pushes her children away and does not even try to connect with them emotionally. The ensuing dialogues create some hilarious moments in the play that is loved by the audience all around the world. While everyone tries to woo her or acquire her property, Maggie fights for her rights and what she believes is the opposite of the cultural precedent that has been burdened on her.

John B. Keane is originally from Listowel, County Kerry and hence, you will be able to see some elements of his upbringing fuse with the play.
